I'm gonna guess they aren't the same as multiplayer.
Damage has 3 things (including melee): normal hit, armored hit, and critical hit. If you hit them in the armor it does less damage (rhinos and hunters, now phantoms hard to kill...and breeder I suppose). If you hit them in the glowing spots they die quicker.
